Annualized Return Calculator
Annualize an investment gain or loss over a known holding period
Annualized return
How we calculated it
About the Annualized Return Calculator
Annualized return converts an investment gain or loss over a multi-period holding period into an equivalent compounded yearly rate. It is useful for comparing investments held for different lengths of time on a common annual basis.
It differs from simply dividing total return by the number of years because compounding matters. A 20% gain over two years is not exactly 10% per year when the equivalent annual rate is compounded.
How to Use the Annualized Return Calculator
- Enter the beginning investment value.
- Enter the ending value or total holding-period return.
- Enter the exact holding period in years or supported time units.
- Calculate the annualized rate and distinguish it from a simple average return.
How the Calculation Works
Annualized return = (ending value ÷ beginning value)^(1/t) −1, where t is the holding period in years.
If total return R is already known, annualized return = (1+R)^(1/t)−1. For periods shorter than one year, the formula extrapolates the observed growth rate, which can produce extreme results from short-term moves.
Worked example
Annualized Return Calculator Worked Example
$10,000 grows to $12,100 in 2 years
Annualized return = (12,100÷10,000)^(1/2)−1 = √1.21−1 = 10% per year.
Result guide
Understanding Your Annualized Return Calculator Result
The result is the constant yearly compound rate that links the beginning and ending values. It does not describe volatility or the path the investment took between those points.
Before you rely on the answer
Assumptions and Limitations
- Beginning value is positive.
- Holding period is measured accurately.
- Cash flows such as deposits and withdrawals are excluded or handled by a return method designed for them.
Practical tip
Using This Result in Practice
Do not annualize a very short lucky period and treat it as a forecast. A one-week gain can translate into an enormous annualized percentage even though repeating that return for a full year is unrealistic.

Common questions
Annualized Return Calculator FAQ
What is annualized return?
The equivalent compounded yearly rate that connects the starting and ending values over the holding period.
Why not divide total return by years?
Simple division ignores compounding and generally gives a different result.
Can a short-term return be annualized?
Mathematically yes, but the result can be misleading as a forecast.
