About the EV Charging Cost Calculator

EV Charging Cost Calculator estimates the electricity cost of adding energy to an electric vehicle battery. It is useful for home charging, trip budgeting and comparing electricity tariffs with fuel costs.

Battery energy added and energy drawn from the wall are not identical because charging losses occur. Time-of-use pricing and public charging fees can also change the final cost.

How to Use the EV Charging Cost Calculator

  1. Enter battery energy to add or starting and ending state of charge.
  2. Enter battery usable capacity if state-of-charge percentages are used.
  3. Enter electricity price per kWh.
  4. Enter charging efficiency when supported and calculate grid energy and cost.

How the Calculation Works

Battery energy added = usable battery capacity × change in state of charge.

Grid energy required = battery energy added ÷ charging efficiency. Charging cost = grid energy × electricity price per kWh. Session fees or demand charges are separate unless included.

Worked example

EV Charging Cost Calculator Worked Example

Add 40 kWh to the battery at 90% efficiency and $0.20/kWh

Grid energy = 40÷0.90 ≈ 44.44 kWh. Cost ≈ 44.44×$0.20 = $8.89.

Result guide

Understanding Your EV Charging Cost Calculator Result

The result estimates electricity purchased for the charging session. It does not include parking fees, charger membership charges or battery degradation cost unless those are added separately.

Before you rely on the answer

Assumptions and Limitations

  • Battery-capacity and state-of-charge inputs use the same usable-capacity basis.
  • Electricity tariff is appropriate for the charging time and location.
  • Charging efficiency is a realistic average.

Practical tip

Using This Result in Practice

For home time-of-use tariffs, calculate off-peak and peak charging separately. The same kWh session can cost very different amounts depending on when charging occurs.

Common questions

EV Charging Cost Calculator FAQ

Why is wall energy higher than battery energy added?

Charging losses in the charger, battery and thermal systems mean not all grid energy becomes stored battery energy.

How do I calculate charging cost?

Multiply grid kWh used by the electricity price per kWh.

Does the calculator include public charger session fees?

Only if those fees are explicitly entered.
