About the EV Range & Cost Calculator
EV Range & Cost Calculator connects battery energy, vehicle efficiency and electricity price to estimate driving range and cost per mile or kilometre. It is useful for comparing routes, vehicles and charging prices.
Real EV efficiency changes with speed, temperature, cabin heating, elevation, tires and driving style. Rated efficiency is therefore a planning input rather than a guarantee.
How to Use the EV Range & Cost Calculator
- Enter usable battery energy available for the trip.
- Enter vehicle efficiency in kWh per 100 km, Wh per mile or another supported format.
- Enter electricity price if cost is required.
- Calculate range and energy cost, then test a worse-efficiency scenario for cold weather or highway driving.
How the Calculation Works
Range = usable energy ÷ energy consumption per distance after units are aligned.
If efficiency is given as kWh/100 km, range in km = usable kWh ÷ consumption ×100. Cost per 100 km = consumption × electricity price per kWh.
Worked example
EV Range & Cost Calculator Worked Example
60 kWh usable energy at 18 kWh/100 km
Estimated range = 60÷18×100 ≈ 333 km. At $0.20/kWh, energy cost is 18×$0.20 = $3.60 per 100 km.
Result guide
Understanding Your EV Range & Cost Calculator Result
The result is an energy-based estimate. Reserve buffers and changing efficiency mean drivers should not plan to arrive at exactly zero usable energy.
Before you rely on the answer
Assumptions and Limitations
- Usable battery energy is distinguished from gross battery capacity.
- Efficiency input matches expected driving conditions.
- Charging price is treated separately from vehicle efficiency.
Practical tip
Using This Result in Practice
For trip planning, keep a reserve and use recent real consumption if available. Manufacturer combined-cycle figures can be optimistic for sustained high-speed or very cold driving.

Common questions
EV Range & Cost Calculator FAQ
How is EV range estimated from battery energy?
Divide usable battery energy by energy consumption per unit distance.
Why is winter range lower?
Cabin heating, battery temperature and other cold-weather effects often increase energy consumption.
Should I use gross or usable battery capacity?
Usable capacity is generally more appropriate for real driving-range estimates.
