About the Conduit Fill Calculator

Conduit Fill Calculator estimates how much of an electrical raceway’s internal cross-sectional area is occupied by conductors. It is useful for checking physical space before installation, but allowable fill limits come from the applicable electrical code and conductor/raceway rules.

Conduit fill is not based only on conductor count. Different wire sizes and insulation types have different cross-sectional areas, and permitted fill percentages can change with the number of conductors.

How to Use the Conduit Fill Calculator

  1. Choose conduit type and trade size or enter its internal area.
  2. Enter each conductor type, size and quantity.
  3. Calculate total conductor area.
  4. Compare the resulting fill percentage with the applicable code limit for the exact installation.

How the Calculation Works

Total conductor area = sum of conductor cross-sectional area × quantity for each conductor group.

Fill percentage = total conductor area ÷ conduit internal area ×100. Allowable percentages are not universal across every conductor count, raceway type or jurisdiction and should be applied from the relevant code table.

Worked example

Conduit Fill Calculator Worked Example

Conductor area totals 120 mm² inside conduit with 300 mm² usable internal area

Fill percentage = 120÷300×100 = 40%.

Result guide

Understanding Your Conduit Fill Calculator Result

A 40% result describes geometric occupancy under the entered areas. Whether 40% is permitted depends on conductor count, conduit type and the governing electrical rules.

Before you rely on the answer

Assumptions and Limitations

  • Conductor areas match the actual insulation type and size.
  • Conduit internal area matches the selected raceway.
  • Code limits are checked separately from the arithmetic.

Practical tip

Using This Result in Practice

Do not substitute outside conductor diameter into a rough circle formula when official conductor-area tables are available. Insulation shape and published areas are more reliable for compliance work.

Common questions

Conduit Fill Calculator FAQ

How is conduit fill percentage calculated?

Divide total conductor cross-sectional area by conduit internal area and multiply by 100.

Is 40% always the maximum?

No. Allowed fill depends on conductor count, raceway type and applicable electrical code.

Should I use conductor diameter or published conductor area?

Published conductor-area values are preferable when available.
