About the Hours Between Times Calculator
Hours Between Times Calculator finds elapsed time between two clock readings, including cases that cross midnight. It is useful for work shifts, travel segments, study sessions and other schedules where start and end times are known.
Clock-time subtraction can be confusing when one time is late at night and the other is after midnight. The calculation also needs a clear rule for whether both times belong to the same day or span into the next day.
How to Use the Hours Between Times Calculator
- Enter the start time.
- Enter the end time.
- Specify AM/PM or use 24-hour format consistently.
- Choose whether the end time is on the same day or next day when that is not obvious, then calculate elapsed hours and minutes.
How the Calculation Works
Each clock time can be converted into minutes from midnight.
Elapsed minutes = end minutes − start minutes for a same-day interval. If the intended interval crosses midnight and the result is negative, add 1,440 minutes, then convert the duration back into hours and minutes.
Worked example
Hours Between Times Calculator Worked Example
10:30 PM to 6:15 AM next day
22:30 is 1,350 minutes after midnight and 06:15 is 375. Crossing midnight gives 375+1,440−1,350 = 465 minutes, or 7 hours 45 minutes.
Result guide
Understanding Your Hours Between Times Calculator Result
The result is elapsed duration, not a time-of-day value. It does not automatically subtract meal breaks or unpaid time unless those are entered separately.

Assumptions and Limitations
- Start and end times use the same local time basis.
- Cross-midnight intent is specified correctly.
- Daylight-saving transitions are excluded from simple clock arithmetic unless date-aware logic is used.
Practical tip
Using This Result in Practice
For payroll or travel calculations spanning a daylight-saving change, use actual dated timestamps rather than simple clock times. A local clock interval can be one hour longer or shorter than it appears.

Common questions
Hours Between Times Calculator FAQ
How do I calculate time across midnight?
Convert both times to minutes from midnight and add 1,440 minutes to the end time when it belongs to the next day.
Does the calculator subtract breaks?
Only if break time is explicitly included in the calculation.
Can daylight saving affect elapsed hours?
Yes. Date-aware timestamps are needed when the interval crosses a clock change.
