About the Brick Wall Calculator

Brick Wall Calculator estimates brick count, wall volume and related masonry quantities from wall dimensions, brick size and mortar-joint assumptions. It is useful for early material planning before placing an order.

Nominal brick size can include mortar joints while actual brick dimensions do not. Openings, bond pattern, cuts and breakage all influence the final count.

How to Use the Brick Wall Calculator

  1. Enter wall length and height.
  2. Enter brick dimensions and mortar-joint thickness under the calculator’s chosen convention.
  3. Subtract large openings such as doors and windows.
  4. Calculate brick count and apply a practical waste allowance.

How the Calculation Works

Net wall area = gross wall area − opening area.

A modular brick face area includes the brick face dimensions plus the relevant mortar-joint allowance. Theoretical count = net wall area ÷ modular face area, adjusted for the bond and wall thickness when required.

Worked example

Brick Wall Calculator Worked Example

20 m² wall with modular brick face 0.02 m²

Theoretical count = 20÷0.02 = 1,000 bricks before cuts, breakage and bond-specific adjustments.

Result guide

Understanding Your Brick Wall Calculator Result

The theoretical count assumes complete modular coverage. Corners, piers and half-brick cuts can increase the purchased quantity. For thicker masonry walls, brick count may need to reflect more than one wythe. A double-wythe wall can use roughly twice the face-area brick quantity before bond details, because the wall contains two masonry layers rather than one.

Before you rely on the answer

Assumptions and Limitations

  • Wall dimensions reflect the actual masonry area.
  • Brick and joint dimensions match the product and bond.
  • Openings are removed consistently.

Practical tip

Using This Result in Practice

Use the supplier’s actual brick dimensions and the mason’s planned joint thickness. Small dimensional differences multiply across hundreds or thousands of units.

Common questions

Brick Wall Calculator FAQ

Should door and window openings be deducted?

Yes when they are large enough to materially reduce brick quantity.

Why include mortar joint size?

Joint thickness changes the modular area occupied by each brick in the wall.

How much waste should I add?

Waste depends on cuts, handling and bond pattern, so use a project-appropriate allowance.
