Concrete Block Calculator
Estimate concrete masonry blocks for a wall with mortar joints, openings and waste allowance

How we calculated it
About the Concrete Block Calculator
Concrete-block walls are usually estimated from wall area and the face area of one block, then adjusted for openings and waste. Block dimensions and mortar-joint module matter because nominal block size can differ from the actual masonry unit.
This calculator provides a quantity estimate for planning, while reinforcement, grout, mortar and structural requirements remain separate.
How to Use the Concrete Block Calculator
- Measure wall length and height.
- Subtract major door and window openings if the calculator supports them.
- Choose the block size or module used by the project.
- Calculate whole blocks and add a waste allowance for cuts and breakage.
How the Calculation Works
Net wall area = gross wall area − excluded openings. Effective block face area is derived from block dimensions and the selected joint/module convention.
Required block count = net wall area ÷ effective block face area, then adjusted for waste and rounded to whole units.
Worked example
Concrete Block Calculator Worked Example
200 ft² wall using nominal 8×8×16 block
A common nominal 8×16-inch face covers about 0.889 ft² before detailed joint convention. 200÷0.889 ≈ 225 blocks as a rough theoretical count, before openings, bond pattern and waste are finalized.
Result guide
Understanding Your Concrete Block Calculator Result
Block count is a material estimate, not a structural design. Bond pattern, corners, lintels and special units can change the actual order.
Before you rely on the answer
Assumptions and Limitations
- Wall area and openings are measured correctly.
- Block face/module dimensions match the selected product.
- Waste, special units and structural details are handled separately unless modeled.
Practical tip
Using This Result in Practice
Check the supplier’s nominal and actual block dimensions before finalizing the order. Corner blocks, bond beams and half blocks should be counted separately if the wall design requires them.

After estimating block count, use the Mortar Calculator separately for joint material.
If the wall includes poured footings or filled structural sections, estimate that concrete separately with the Concrete Calculator.
Common questions
Concrete Block Calculator FAQ
How many blocks are needed per square foot?
It depends on the block face size and mortar-joint module, so use the actual product dimensions rather than one universal rate.
Should windows and doors be subtracted?
Large openings should generally be deducted, while small openings may not reduce purchases proportionally because cuts and waste remain.
Does this calculator include mortar?
No unless explicitly stated. Mortar quantity is a separate calculation based on joint dimensions and block layout.
