About the Time Card Calculator

Time cards turn clock-in and clock-out records into paid hours. The arithmetic becomes less obvious when a shift includes lunch breaks, several work segments or overnight work.

This calculator organizes those intervals so hours can be totaled consistently before payroll rates or overtime rules are applied.

How to Use the Time Card Calculator

  1. Enter each clock-in and clock-out time for the workday or pay period.
  2. Enter unpaid break time or separate work segments as required.
  3. Confirm whether any shift crosses midnight.
  4. Calculate net hours and keep the raw time records for payroll verification.

How the Calculation Works

Each clock interval is converted to elapsed minutes. Break minutes are subtracted from gross elapsed time to produce net worked minutes.

Net minutes are converted to hours and minutes or decimal hours. Multiple shifts are summed after each interval has been validated.

Worked example

Time Card Calculator Worked Example

8:15 AM to 5:00 PM with 45-minute lunch

Gross elapsed time is 8 hours 45 minutes. Subtract the 45-minute unpaid break to get 8 hours of net work time.

Result guide

Understanding Your Time Card Calculator Result

The result is worked time under the entries provided. Overtime eligibility, paid-break rules and rounding requirements are separate payroll-policy questions.

Before you rely on the answer

Assumptions and Limitations

  • Clock times are entered accurately.
  • Breaks are classified correctly as paid or unpaid.
  • Payroll rounding and overtime rules are not inferred unless explicitly modeled.

Practical tip

Using This Result in Practice

Keep original clock records even if payroll uses decimal hours. That makes disputes and rounding questions easier to review later. For recurring payroll checks, use the same rounding convention every pay period instead of rounding some shifts by minutes and others by decimal hours.

Common questions

Time Card Calculator FAQ

Should lunch be subtracted from the time card?

Only if it is an unpaid break under the applicable policy. Paid breaks remain part of worked time.

How is an overnight shift handled?

The end time must be treated as occurring on the following day so the interval remains positive.

Does the time-card total decide overtime?

No. Overtime depends on applicable law and policy, including the relevant workweek and eligibility rules.
