About the Salary to Hourly Calculator

Comparing a salary with an hourly job is difficult until both are placed on the same time basis. This calculator converts annual, monthly or weekly pay into an hourly equivalent using the work schedule you enter.

The result is a pay-rate comparison, not necessarily the value of every hour you spend working. Unpaid overtime, bonuses, benefits, leave and different weekly schedules can make two jobs with the same calculated hourly equivalent feel very different.

How to Use the Salary to Hourly Calculator

  1. Enter the salary amount and confirm whether it is annual, monthly or another pay period.
  2. Enter the number of paid or worked hours per week that best represents the job.
  3. Enter the working weeks per year if the schedule differs from a standard full-year assumption.
  4. Calculate the hourly equivalent, then compare benefits, overtime expectations and bonuses separately.

How the Calculation Works

For an annual salary, hourly equivalent = annual salary ÷ annual work hours. Annual work hours = hours per week × working weeks per year.

When salary is entered for another period, it is first annualized or converted to a consistent time basis before division. The calculator does not automatically assign a cash value to benefits or unpaid time.

Worked example

Salary to Hourly Calculator Worked Example

$62,400 salary at 40 hours per week

At 40 hours per week for 52 weeks, annual work hours are 40 × 52 = 2,080. Divide salary by hours: $62,400 ÷ 2,080 = $30 per hour.

Use the result to compare base compensation on a time basis. If a salaried role regularly requires more hours than entered, its effective hourly pay is lower than the calculator result.

  • Bonuses, benefits, payroll taxes and overtime premiums are separate unless explicitly included.

Practical tip

Using This Result in Practice

When comparing two jobs, run the calculation with the hours you realistically expect to work rather than the hours written in a standard contract. Then compare leave, insurance, retirement contributions and bonuses separately.

Common questions

Salary to Hourly Calculator FAQ

Is salary divided by 2,080 always the correct hourly rate?

Only if you are assuming 40 hours per week for 52 weeks. A different weekly schedule or number of working weeks changes the denominator.

Should paid vacation reduce the weeks per year?

If the salary continues during paid leave, many comparisons still use 52 paid weeks. If you are measuring actual hours worked, you may choose a different denominator depending on the purpose.

Does the hourly equivalent include benefits?

No. Health insurance, retirement contributions, bonuses and other benefits need a separate valuation if you are comparing total compensation.
