Density Calculator

Calculate density, mass or volume from two known values

Density mode: A = mass, B = volume.

Your result will appear here.

About the Density Calculator

Density describes how much mass is packed into a given volume. It is useful for material identification, weight estimates and converting between a known volume and the mass that volume would contain.

The same material can have different bulk density depending on temperature, moisture, compaction or whether the value describes a solid substance or a loose granular material.

How to Use the Density Calculator

  1. Enter any two known quantities among mass, volume and density.
  2. Choose compatible units for each quantity.
  3. Calculate the missing value.
  4. Use a density value that matches the material condition rather than relying on a generic reference when practical accuracy matters.

How the Calculation Works

Density is ρ = m/V, where m is mass and V is volume. Rearranging gives mass m = ρV and volume V = m/ρ.

The calculator converts units to a common mass-volume basis before applying the formula, then converts the result to the requested output unit.

Worked example

Density Calculator Worked Example

12 kg occupying 0.004 m³

Density = 12÷0.004 = 3,000 kg/m³. If another 0.01 m³ of the same ideal material is assumed, mass would be 3,000×0.01 = 30 kg.

Result guide

Understanding Your Density Calculator Result

Density is a ratio, so a higher value means more mass occupies the same volume. Bulk-density values for loose materials should not be confused with the intrinsic density of the solid particles.

Before you rely on the answer

Assumptions and Limitations

  • Mass and volume refer to the same material sample.
  • Units are converted consistently.
  • Temperature, pressure, moisture and compaction effects are excluded unless reflected in the entered density.

Practical tip

Using This Result in Practice

For gravel, soil, sand or other loose materials, use supplier bulk density when ordering by weight. A textbook material density can be very different from the delivered bulk density.

Common questions

Density Calculator FAQ

What is the density formula?

Density equals mass divided by volume: ρ=m/V.

Can density change?

Yes. Temperature, pressure, moisture, packing and material condition can change measured or bulk density.

What is the difference between density and weight?

Density is mass per unit volume; weight is a force caused by gravity acting on mass.
