About the Price Per Unit Calculator

Price per unit compares products on a common quantity basis such as cost per item, kilogram, litre or ounce. It is useful when packages have different sizes and shelf price alone is misleading.

Unit price should only compare quantities that are truly equivalent. A cheaper cost per kilogram may not be better value if product quality or usable yield differs.

How to Use the Price Per Unit Calculator

  1. Enter package price.
  2. Enter package quantity and unit.
  3. Calculate cost per unit.
  4. Convert competing products to the same unit before comparing them.

How the Calculation Works

Price per unit = package price ÷ package quantity.

If units differ, the quantity is converted to a common base before division so the resulting unit prices are directly comparable.

Worked example

Price Per Unit Calculator Worked Example

$12 for 3 kg versus $9 for 2 kg

First product = $12÷3 = $4/kg. Second product = $9÷2 = $4.50/kg. On unit price alone, the first product is cheaper.

Result guide

Understanding Your Price Per Unit Calculator Result

Unit price removes package-size differences, but it does not measure quality, waste or suitability. Check whether the package quantity is net usable quantity. Products with bones, shells, concentrated formulas or unavoidable waste can have a low sticker unit price but a higher effective cost per usable unit.

Before you rely on the answer

Assumptions and Limitations

  • Package quantity is accurate.
  • Products are compared on a compatible unit basis.
  • Quality and usable yield are outside the arithmetic.

Practical tip

Using This Result in Practice

For concentrated or diluted products, compare the cost per usable dose or finished quantity rather than only the raw package weight. Multi-buy promotions can complicate the comparison. Base the unit price on the quantity you will actually receive and pay for, not on a promotional headline that assumes buying more product than you need.
