About the Operating Margin Calculator

Operating margin measures operating income as a percentage of revenue. It shows how much of each sales dollar remains after operating costs but before items such as interest and taxes.

Because accounting classifications vary, operating margin comparisons are most useful when companies use similar definitions and operate in similar industries.

How to Use the Operating Margin Calculator

  1. Enter revenue.
  2. Enter operating income, or the operating expenses needed to derive it.
  3. Calculate operating margin.
  4. Compare the ratio over time and against similar businesses rather than against unrelated sectors.

How the Calculation Works

Operating margin = operating income ÷ revenue × 100.

Operating income generally reflects revenue minus cost of goods sold and operating expenses before financing and income-tax effects.

Worked example

Operating Margin Calculator Worked Example

$2 million operating income on $10 million revenue

Operating margin = $2m÷$10m×100 = 20%.

Result guide

Understanding Your Operating Margin Calculator Result

A 20% operating margin means 20 cents of operating profit remain from each revenue dollar before interest and tax under the stated accounting definition. Because operating margin excludes financing and tax effects, it is often a better view of operating economics than net margin when capital structures differ. Even so, lease accounting, depreciation policy and one-time operating charges can still affect comparability.

Assumptions and Limitations

  • Revenue and operating income cover the same period.
  • Operating-income classification is consistent across comparisons.
  • Non-operating items are excluded.

Practical tip

Using This Result in Practice

Compare operating margin with gross margin to see how much profitability is being consumed by operating expenses below gross profit. A falling operating margin can come from weaker pricing, rising input costs or faster growth in operating expenses, so the ratio should be reconciled to the underlying income-statement lines rather than viewed only as one percentage.
