Decimal Time Calculator
Convert hours, minutes and seconds to decimal hours and payroll-style decimal time
Decimal hours
How we calculated it
About the Decimal Time Calculator
Decimal Time Calculator converts hours, minutes and seconds into decimal hours or converts decimal hours back into clock-style time. It is especially useful for payroll, billing and spreadsheets where 7 hours 30 minutes is entered as 7.5 hours.
Minutes are base 60, not base 100. Treating 7:30 as 7.30 hours understates the elapsed time because 30 minutes is one half of an hour.
How to Use the Decimal Time Calculator
- Enter hours, minutes and seconds for a clock-time conversion or enter decimal hours for the reverse conversion.
- Choose the output format you need.
- Calculate the result.
- Keep decimal hours separate from HH:MM notation when copying values into payroll or spreadsheet systems.
How the Calculation Works
Decimal hours = hours + minutes/60 + seconds/3600.
To convert decimal hours back, the whole-number part gives hours; the fractional part is multiplied by 60 for minutes, and any remaining minute fraction is multiplied by 60 for seconds.
Worked example
Decimal Time Calculator Worked Example
7 hours 45 minutes to decimal hours
Decimal time = 7 + 45/60 = 7 + 0.75 = 7.75 hours.
Result guide
Understanding Your Decimal Time Calculator Result
Decimal time is a numeric duration representation, not a clock display. For example, 7.75 hours means 7 hours 45 minutes, not 7:75.

Assumptions and Limitations
- Inputs represent elapsed time rather than a time of day unless the selected mode says otherwise.
- Minutes and seconds remain within valid ranges in clock-style input.
- Displayed decimals may be rounded.
Practical tip
Using This Result in Practice
For payroll, keep enough decimal places to avoid cumulative rounding errors across many shifts. Round the final pay-period total according to the employer’s policy.
