Rebar Calculator

Estimate reinforcing-bar runs, total length and weight for a rectangular slab grid

Your result will appear here.

About the Rebar Calculator

Rebar Calculator estimates reinforcing-bar quantity from slab, wall or footing dimensions and the chosen bar spacing. It helps turn a reinforcement layout into bar counts and total linear length before laps, hooks and waste are added.

Rebar quantity is not a structural design decision. Bar diameter, spacing, cover, lap length and placement must follow the engineered design or applicable construction requirements.

How to Use the Rebar Calculator

  1. Enter the concrete section length and width or the supported structural dimensions.
  2. Enter rebar spacing for each direction.
  3. Enter edge cover if the calculator includes it.
  4. Calculate bar count and length, then add lap, splice, hook and waste allowances according to the actual reinforcement detail.

How the Calculation Works

For a grid, usable dimension is reduced by edge cover where applicable. Number of spaces is based on usable dimension ÷ spacing and rounded so spacing does not exceed the design limit; bar count is generally spaces + 1.

Total linear rebar is the sum of the bar count in each direction multiplied by the corresponding bar length. Stock-bar count is then derived from available bar length and rounded up.

Worked example

Rebar Calculator Worked Example

20 ft slab with bars roughly every 2 ft

A 20 ft usable run divided by 2 ft spacing gives 10 spaces, requiring about 11 bar lines across that direction before cover, laps and detailing are finalized.

Result guide

Understanding Your Rebar Calculator Result

The estimate describes material implied by the entered layout. It does not verify whether the reinforcement pattern is structurally adequate.

Before you rely on the answer

Assumptions and Limitations

  • Spacing and cover match the approved design.
  • Bar runs are adequately represented by straight lengths.
  • Laps, hooks, chairs and special reinforcing details are excluded unless explicitly added.

Practical tip

Using This Result in Practice

Use the structural drawings as the source of truth. A material calculator should price the specified reinforcement, not invent a bar size or spacing from slab dimensions alone.

Common questions

Rebar Calculator FAQ

How is rebar count estimated from spacing?

Divide the usable dimension by the maximum spacing, round spaces up where needed and add a bar for the opposite edge.

Does the calculator design the reinforcement?

No. Structural bar size and spacing must come from engineering or applicable design requirements.

Should lap length be included?

Yes for purchasing when bars must be spliced, using the lap requirement specified for the project.
