Irrigation Runtime Calculator
Estimate sprinkler runtime from target water depth and measured application rate
Total weekly runtime
How we calculated it
About the Irrigation Runtime Calculator
Irrigation Runtime Calculator estimates how long a sprinkler or irrigation zone should run to apply a target water depth from a known precipitation rate. It connects inches or millimetres of water needed with how quickly the system applies it.
Runtime does not determine how much water plants actually need. Weather, soil, rooting depth and local watering guidance should determine the target depth or schedule.
How to Use the Irrigation Runtime Calculator
- Enter the target irrigation depth.
- Enter the measured or specified precipitation rate for the zone.
- Calculate runtime.
- Split long runtimes into shorter cycles when soil infiltration is slower than the application rate.
How the Calculation Works
Runtime = target water depth ÷ precipitation rate when both are expressed on the same time basis.
For example, if a sprinkler applies 0.5 inches per hour and the target is 1 inch, ideal runtime is 2 hours.
Worked example
Irrigation Runtime Calculator Worked Example
Apply 0.75 inch at 0.5 inch per hour
Runtime = 0.75÷0.5 = 1.5 hours, or 90 minutes.
Result guide
Understanding Your Irrigation Runtime Calculator Result
The result is the time needed to apply the target depth at the assumed average precipitation rate. It does not account for runoff, wind drift or uneven distribution. Distribution uniformity also matters. A zone can have the correct average precipitation rate while dry and wet spots receive very different amounts, so catch-can testing can improve real scheduling decisions.
Before you rely on the answer
Assumptions and Limitations
- Precipitation rate represents the actual zone.
- Target depth is appropriate for the landscape and conditions.
- Application rate remains approximately constant.
Practical tip
Using This Result in Practice
If water begins running off before the calculated runtime is complete, use cycle-and-soak scheduling rather than continuing one long irrigation event.

Common questions
Irrigation Runtime Calculator FAQ
How do I calculate sprinkler runtime?
Divide the target water depth by the sprinkler precipitation rate.
Why split irrigation into cycles?
It can reduce runoff when application is faster than soil infiltration.
Does the calculator know how much my lawn needs?
No. Target depth should come from appropriate landscape and weather guidance.
