Reading Time Calculator
Estimate reading or speaking time from word count and pace

About the Reading Time Calculator
Reading Time Calculator estimates how long a piece of text takes to read from word count and an assumed reading speed. It is useful for articles, scripts, study planning and content design.
Reading speed varies with difficulty, familiarity, purpose and whether the reader is skimming or studying. A technical paper and a casual blog post should not automatically use the same words-per-minute assumption.
How to Use the Reading Time Calculator
- Enter or obtain the text word count.
- Enter a reading speed appropriate to the audience and material.
- Calculate estimated reading time.
- Use a slower rate for dense study material and a faster rate for light scanning when planning realistically.
How the Calculation Works
Reading time in minutes = word count ÷ reading speed in words per minute.
The decimal result can be converted to minutes and seconds. For example, 2.5 minutes is 2 minutes 30 seconds.
Worked example
Reading Time Calculator Worked Example
1,500 words at 250 words per minute
Reading time = 1,500÷250 = 6 minutes.
Result guide
Understanding Your Reading Time Calculator Result
The estimate describes continuous reading at the selected average rate. Pauses for notes, diagrams, links or reflection increase real completion time. For spoken presentations, narration pace is different from silent reading pace. If the text will be delivered aloud, use a speaking-time estimate or a lower words-per-minute assumption rather than ordinary reading speed.

Assumptions and Limitations
- Word count is representative of the material being read.
- Selected reading speed matches the reader and purpose.
- Non-text elements and pauses are excluded unless allowed for.
Practical tip
Using This Result in Practice
For study planning, measure your own reading pace on similar material. Personal observed speed is more useful than a generic internet average.

Common questions
Reading Time Calculator FAQ
What reading speed should I use?
Use a rate appropriate to the material and reader; dense study material is generally slower than casual reading.
Does reading time include note-taking?
Not in the basic estimate unless you reduce the reading-speed assumption or add separate study time.
How is reading time calculated?
Divide word count by words read per minute.
