Concrete Column Calculator
Estimate concrete volume, waste allowance and bag quantities for round or rectangular columns
Concrete required
How we calculated it
About the Concrete Column Calculator
Concrete column quantity depends on the column cross-section, height and number of columns. Round and rectangular columns use different area formulas, so selecting the correct shape is essential before converting the volume into ready-mix or bag quantities.
The calculator estimates concrete material only. Column dimensions, reinforcement, cover, formwork and structural capacity should come from an appropriate design rather than from the volume calculation.
How to Use the Concrete Column Calculator
- Choose round or rectangular column mode.
- Enter the cross-section dimensions and column height.
- Enter the number of identical columns and a reasonable waste allowance.
- Calculate concrete volume and convert it to the supplier’s selling unit.
How the Calculation Works
For a rectangular column, volume = width × depth × height. For a round column, volume = πr²h using the column radius.
The volume of one column is multiplied by quantity, units are normalized and waste is applied before conversion to cubic yards, cubic metres or bag equivalents.
Worked example
Concrete Column Calculator Worked Example
Four 12×12 in columns, each 10 ft high
12 inches = 1 ft, so one column volume = 1×1×10 = 10 ft³. Four columns require 40 ft³, or about 1.48 yd³ before waste.
Result guide
Understanding Your Concrete Column Calculator Result
The result is net concrete volume for the specified geometry. It does not include footings, capitals, beams or other attached structural concrete unless those are calculated separately.
Before you rely on the answer
Assumptions and Limitations
- Column shape and dimensions match the design.
- All columns counted are genuinely identical in the selected calculation.
- Rebar displacement is normally ignored in small material estimates unless specifically modeled.
Practical tip
Using This Result in Practice
For multiple column sizes, group identical columns and calculate each group separately. Avoid averaging diameters or widths because area depends on squared dimensions.

If reinforcement quantity is also required, use the Rebar Calculator separately.
Common questions
Concrete Column Calculator FAQ
How do I calculate concrete for a round column?
Use πr²h for one column, then multiply by the number of columns.
Should I subtract rebar volume?
Usually not for ordinary ordering estimates because the displacement is relatively small, though specialized work may account for it.
Can this calculator design a structural column?
No. It estimates material volume only.
