Frequency Converter

Convert frequency between hertz, metric frequency units and revolutions per minute

Your result will appear here.

About the Frequency Converter

Frequency Converter changes rates of repetition between hertz, kilohertz, megahertz, gigahertz and other supported frequency units. It is useful for electronics, radio, audio and timing specifications.

Frequency in hertz means cycles per second. Converting the unit changes only the numerical scale, not the underlying signal or its wavelength.

How to Use the Frequency Converter

  1. Enter the signal or repetition frequency.
  2. Select the current prefix and unit, such as Hz, kHz, MHz or GHz.
  3. Choose the frequency unit needed for the output.
  4. Convert and keep period or wavelength as separate calculations rather than treating them as unit changes.

How the Calculation Works

The converter uses hertz as a common basis. 1 kHz = 1,000 Hz, 1 MHz = 1,000,000 Hz and 1 GHz = 1,000,000,000 Hz.

If period is needed instead of frequency, period T = 1/f, which is a different calculation from changing frequency units.

Worked example

Frequency Converter Worked Example

2.4 GHz to MHz

2.4 GHz = 2.4×1,000 = 2,400 MHz.

Result guide

Understanding Your Frequency Converter Result

The converted value represents the same repetition rate. A higher number caused by choosing a smaller unit does not mean the signal frequency physically increased. For clock, audio and radio specifications, scientific notation is useful when the prefix changes by several orders of magnitude. Writing 2.45×10^9 Hz beside 2.45 GHz can make it easier to catch prefix mistakes in later formulas.

Assumptions and Limitations

  • Units follow standard SI prefix definitions.
  • Frequency is a non-negative scalar rate.
  • Period or wavelength conversion is not implied by a pure unit conversion.

Practical tip

Using This Result in Practice

When checking radio or processor specifications, write the unit beside every number. Confusing MHz and GHz creates a factor-of-1,000 error.

Common questions

Frequency Converter FAQ

How many hertz are in 1 MHz?

1,000,000 Hz.

How many MHz are in 1 GHz?

1,000 MHz.

Is frequency conversion the same as finding wavelength?

No. Wavelength also requires the wave’s propagation speed.
