Carpet Calculator
Estimate carpet purchase area and roll length for a rectangular room
Carpet required
How we calculated it
About the Carpet Calculator
Carpet Calculator estimates how much carpet is needed from room dimensions, roll width and layout. Unlike simple floor-area calculations, carpet ordering can require additional material because seams and roll direction affect how pieces are cut.
Pattern repeats, stairs, irregular rooms and directional pile can increase waste. A room with 200 square feet of floor area may therefore require more than 200 square feet of carpet from the roll.
How to Use the Carpet Calculator
- Measure each room’s maximum length and width.
- Enter carpet roll width if layout estimation is supported.
- Add rooms separately rather than combining irregular spaces into one large rectangle.
- Calculate required area and include seam, pattern or installer waste where appropriate.
How the Calculation Works
Basic floor area = length × width for each rectangular section.
When roll width is fixed, the calculator can estimate the number and length of roll strips required. Purchased area may exceed net floor area because partial roll widths and seam placement create offcuts.
Worked example
Carpet Calculator Worked Example
12 ft × 15 ft room
Net floor area = 12×15 = 180 ft². If carpet comes in a 12-ft roll and runs the 15-ft direction, one 15-ft length of the roll covers the room before trimming allowance.
Result guide
Understanding Your Carpet Calculator Result
The net area is the floor surface to cover, while purchase quantity depends on roll layout. Patterned carpet can require additional matching material.
Before you rely on the answer
Assumptions and Limitations
- Room measurements reflect the maximum finished dimensions.
- Roll width is the actual product width.
- Pattern repeat and seam strategy are handled when relevant.
Practical tip
Using This Result in Practice
For several adjacent rooms, let the installer plan roll direction before ordering. A small change in seam placement can save or consume an entire extra strip.

Common questions
Carpet Calculator FAQ
Why can carpet purchase area exceed room area?
Fixed roll widths, seams, pattern matching and trimming create waste.
Should closets be measured separately?
Yes when their layout changes how carpet strips will be cut.
Does carpet roll direction matter?
Yes. Direction can affect seam count, pattern alignment and required roll length.
