About the Tile Calculator
A tile order starts with surface area, but whole pieces, box quantities, cuts and layout waste determine what must actually be purchased. This calculator brings those factors together for floors, walls and backsplashes.
Tile purchases are constrained by whole pieces and whole boxes. Even when the mathematical area fits exactly, pattern direction, diagonal layouts and edge cuts can increase the real quantity required.
How to Use the Tile Calculator
- Measure the total surface area to be tiled and subtract large areas that will remain uncovered.
- Enter the tile length and width using the actual tile dimensions or the manufacturer’s coverage information.
- Add a waste allowance that matches the layout complexity.
- Calculate whole tiles or boxes, then confirm tiles per box and product availability before ordering.
How the Calculation Works
Tile area = tile length × tile width. Theoretical tile count = net surface area ÷ tile area after units are normalized.
The selected waste allowance increases the required coverage, and the final tile or box quantity is rounded up because partial units are not normally purchased.

120 ft² floor with 12×12 inch tiles
A 12×12 inch tile covers 1 ft², so the theoretical count is 120 tiles. With 10% waste, 120 × 1.10 = 132 tiles. If boxes contain 12 tiles, 132 ÷ 12 = 11 boxes.

How much extra tile should I buy?
There is no universal allowance. Straight layouts often need less extra than diagonal or patterned installations, and fragile or discontinued tile may justify more spare material.
Should I round up to whole boxes?
Yes when the product is sold only by the box. Divide required tiles by tiles per box and round the result up.
Do grout joints change tile count?
They can affect layout slightly, especially over large areas, but many material estimates use nominal tile module dimensions or manufacturer coverage. Follow the product and installation plan.
