Screen Resolution Calculator
Estimate pixel dimensions from screen diagonal, aspect ratio and target PPI

How we calculated it
About the Screen Resolution Calculator
Screen Resolution Calculator works with pixel dimensions such as 1920×1080, 2560×1440 and 3840×2160 to show total pixels, aspect ratio and relative resolution. It is useful for comparing displays, video formats and workspace size.
Resolution describes the pixel grid, not physical screen size. Two displays with the same resolution can have very different pixel density and apparent sharpness when their diagonals differ.
How to Use the Screen Resolution Calculator
- Enter horizontal pixel count.
- Enter vertical pixel count.
- Calculate total pixels and simplified aspect ratio.
- If physical screen size is known, use pixel density separately rather than treating resolution as PPI.
How the Calculation Works
Total pixel count = horizontal pixels × vertical pixels.
Aspect ratio is simplified from width:height by dividing both numbers by their greatest common divisor when an exact integer ratio exists. Megapixels = total pixels÷1,000,000.
Worked example
Screen Resolution Calculator Worked Example
2560×1440 display
Total pixels = 2560×1440 = 3,686,400 pixels, or about 3.69 MP. The ratio simplifies to 16:9.
Result guide
Understanding Your Screen Resolution Calculator Result
A 2560×1440 screen contains about 78% more pixels than 1920×1080, which can increase workspace and detail but also requires more graphics processing for native rendering. Resolution naming can also be ambiguous. Terms such as “2K” and “4K” may refer to different cinema and consumer pixel grids, so exact horizontal×vertical dimensions are more reliable than marketing labels when comparing formats.
Before you rely on the answer
Assumptions and Limitations
- Pixel dimensions represent the native or intended resolution.
- Pixels are counted as discrete horizontal and vertical samples.
- Physical size is treated separately.
Practical tip
Using This Result in Practice
When comparing monitor sharpness, add diagonal size to the analysis. A higher resolution on a much larger display may not produce a higher PPI.

Common questions
Screen Resolution Calculator FAQ
What does 1920×1080 mean?
The display has 1,920 horizontal pixels and 1,080 vertical pixels.
How many pixels are in 4K UHD 3840×2160?
8,294,400 pixels, or about 8.29 megapixels.
Is higher resolution always sharper?
Not by itself; physical screen size determines pixel density.
