About the Image Megapixel Calculator

Image Megapixel Calculator converts image width and height in pixels into total pixel count and megapixels. It is useful for comparing camera resolution, cropping requirements and digital image dimensions.

Megapixels describe pixel quantity, not image quality by themselves. Lens quality, sensor size, focus, noise and processing can matter more than a small difference in megapixel count.

How to Use the Image Megapixel Calculator

  1. Enter image width in pixels.
  2. Enter image height in pixels.
  3. Multiply the dimensions to get total pixels.
  4. Divide by one million to express the result in decimal megapixels.

How the Calculation Works

Total image pixels = horizontal pixel count × vertical pixel count. The two dimensions describe the rectangular pixel grid, so both must be included; using only the longer side cannot determine total image resolution.

Megapixels = total pixels ÷1,000,000 under the common decimal convention. If the image is cropped, repeat the calculation with the remaining width and height because reducing both dimensions can remove a much larger percentage of total pixels than the percentage trimmed from either side alone.

Worked example

Image Megapixel Calculator Worked Example

6000×4000 image

Total pixels = 6000×4000 = 24,000,000 pixels, or 24 megapixels.

Result guide

Understanding Your Image Megapixel Calculator Result

A 24 MP image contains 24 million pixel positions. Cropping the image reduces pixel count because fewer rows and columns remain. Cropping has a squared effect when both dimensions are reduced. Keeping only 80% of the original width and 80% of the original height leaves 64% of the original pixels, so a 24 MP image would fall to about 15.4 MP before any resampling.

Assumptions and Limitations

  • Pixel dimensions are the actual image dimensions.
  • Megapixels use the decimal one-million-pixel convention.
  • Pixel count is not treated as a direct measure of optical quality.

Practical tip

Using This Result in Practice

When preparing prints, use pixel dimensions rather than megapixels alone. Two 24 MP images with different aspect ratios can support different maximum print dimensions at a fixed PPI.

Common questions

Image Megapixel Calculator FAQ

How do I calculate megapixels?

Multiply image width by height in pixels and divide by one million.

Is 6000×4000 exactly 24 MP?

Yes under the decimal megapixel convention.

Does more megapixels always mean a better photo?

No. Optics, sensor characteristics and technique also affect image quality.
