Decking Calculator

Estimate deck surface area and the number of deck boards needed with spacing and waste

Your result will appear here.

About the Decking Calculator

Decking material is governed by deck dimensions, board width, spacing and the direction the boards run. The same square footage can require different linear board quantities depending on the layout.

This calculator estimates board runs and material length, then adds a waste allowance for cuts and offcuts.

How to Use the Decking Calculator

  1. Enter the deck length and width.
  2. Choose the board orientation and actual board face width.
  3. Enter the gap between boards.
  4. Calculate board quantity or linear length and add waste for cuts, borders or pattern changes.

How the Calculation Works

Effective board pitch = board face width + gap. The dimension across the board widths is divided by that pitch to estimate the number of board runs.

Total linear board length = number of runs × the length each run must cover, with waste applied before converting to stock-board quantities.

Worked example

Decking Calculator Worked Example

12 ft wide deck with 5.5-inch boards and 0.25-inch gaps

Effective pitch = 5.5+0.25 = 5.75 inches. Deck width is 144 inches. 144 ÷ 5.75 ≈ 25.04, so the layout requires a practical whole-board-run count rather than 25.04 boards.

Result guide

Understanding Your Decking Calculator Result

A board count based only on area can miss spacing and orientation effects. The actual cutting plan determines how much of each stock length can be reused.

Before you rely on the answer

Assumptions and Limitations

  • Board face width and gap match the intended installation.
  • Deck dimensions represent the covered surface.
  • Borders, stairs and special patterns are added separately unless modeled.

Practical tip

Using This Result in Practice

Sketch where full-length boards, butt joints and picture-frame borders will occur. Stock length selection can reduce waste more effectively than simply increasing a percentage.

Common questions

Decking Calculator FAQ

Why does board gap affect decking quantity?

Each gap contributes to the total width covered by a run of boards, so it changes how many runs fit across the deck.

Should I calculate decking by square feet or linear feet?

Square feet helps describe the deck size, but linear board length is more directly connected to actual boards and layout.

Do border boards need separate material?

Often yes. Picture-frame or breaker-board layouts should be added separately if the basic calculator assumes parallel field boards.
