Estimate deck-board rows and linear footage

About the Deck Board Calculator

Deck Board Calculator estimates the number of deck boards needed from deck dimensions, board width and the planned gap between boards. It is useful because spacing gaps affect how many boards fit across the deck width.

Real deck layouts also need to account for board direction, border boards, picture framing, breaker boards and available stock lengths. Area alone does not determine an efficient cut list.

How to Use the Deck Board Calculator

  1. Enter deck length and width.
  2. Choose the direction the boards will run.
  3. Enter actual board width and desired gap.
  4. Calculate board rows and total linear footage, then add waste for trimming and unusable offcuts.

How the Calculation Works

Effective board module = board width + gap.

Approximate number of board rows = deck width across the boards ÷ effective module, adjusted so the final edge condition is acceptable. Total linear footage = row count × deck length when full-length boards span the run.

Worked example

Deck Board Calculator Worked Example

12 ft deck width using 5.5-inch boards with 0.25-inch gaps

Effective module = 5.75 inches. Width = 144 inches. 144÷5.75 ≈25.04, so about 25–26 board rows are needed depending on edge treatment.

Result guide

Understanding Your Deck Board Calculator Result

The result provides a layout quantity, not a structural design. Joist spacing, board span and fastening must follow the decking product and code requirements.

Before you rely on the answer

Assumptions and Limitations

  • Actual board width is used rather than only nominal lumber size.
  • Gap is measured between adjacent board edges.
  • Border and special-layout boards are handled separately.

Practical tip

Using This Result in Practice

Dry-lay or calculate the final few rows before fastening the whole deck. Adjusting gaps slightly across many boards can avoid an unattractive narrow rip at the last edge.

Common questions

Deck Board Calculator FAQ

Why does deck-board gap affect board count?

Each gap consumes part of the deck width, changing the number of board rows that fit.

Should I use nominal or actual board width?

Use actual finished board width for layout.

Does the calculator include border boards?

Only if they are entered or included in the chosen layout.
