How we calculated it
About the Coffee Ratio Calculator
Coffee Ratio Calculator helps set the relationship between coffee grounds and brewing water by weight. A ratio such as 1:16 means one gram of coffee for every 16 grams of water, making recipes easy to scale without changing brew strength.
The preferred ratio depends on brew method, roast, grind and taste. The calculator preserves the chosen proportion; it does not decide which ratio will taste best to every person.
How to Use the Coffee Ratio Calculator
- Enter either coffee weight or water weight.
- Enter the target coffee-to-water ratio.
- Calculate the missing quantity.
- Use a scale where possible so the ratio is based on weight rather than inconsistent scoops or cup volumes.
How the Calculation Works
For a 1:R coffee-to-water ratio, water weight = coffee weight × R.
To solve for coffee, coffee weight = water weight ÷ R. Because water density is close to 1 g/mL under ordinary brewing conditions, grams of water are often numerically close to millilitres, though weight remains the cleaner basis.
Worked example
Coffee Ratio Calculator Worked Example
30 g coffee at 1:16
Water = 30×16 = 480 g, which is approximately 480 mL of water before brewing losses.
Result guide
Understanding Your Coffee Ratio Calculator Result
A smaller water number, such as 1:14, uses more coffee per unit water and generally produces a stronger brew than 1:18, all else equal.
Before you rely on the answer
Assumptions and Limitations
- Ratio is expressed as coffee weight to water weight.
- Coffee and water measurements are accurate.
- Extraction, grind and brew losses are outside the ratio arithmetic.
Practical tip
Using This Result in Practice
Change only one variable at a time when dialing in coffee. If you alter ratio, grind and brew time together, it becomes difficult to tell which change improved the cup.

Common questions
Coffee Ratio Calculator FAQ
What does 1:16 coffee ratio mean?
It means 1 part coffee by weight for every 16 parts water by weight.
Is a lower ratio number stronger?
Generally yes; 1:14 uses more coffee per unit water than 1:18.
Should coffee ratio use grams?
Weight in grams is usually more repeatable than scoops or cups.
