Measure sales generated per unit of average total assets
Asset turnover
How we calculated it
About the Asset Turnover Calculator
Asset turnover measures how efficiently a business generates revenue from the assets it uses. It is calculated as revenue divided by average total assets and is particularly useful for comparing operating efficiency within similar industries.
Asset-light businesses often have much higher turnover than asset-heavy manufacturers, utilities or property companies. Cross-industry comparisons can therefore be misleading even when the arithmetic is correct.
How to Use the Asset Turnover Calculator
- Enter revenue for the period.
- Enter beginning and ending total assets or an average asset balance.
- Calculate asset turnover.
- Compare the result with prior periods and businesses with similar asset intensity.
How the Calculation Works
Average assets = (beginning total assets + ending total assets)÷2 when a simple period average is used.
Asset turnover = revenue ÷ average total assets. The ratio is normally expressed as times rather than as a percentage.
Worked example
Asset Turnover Calculator Worked Example
$12 million revenue and $6 million average assets
Asset turnover = $12m÷$6m = 2.0 times.
Result guide
Understanding Your Asset Turnover Calculator Result
A 2.0 turnover means annual revenue equals twice the average asset base. It does not show whether that revenue is profitable. A rising asset-turnover ratio can result from stronger revenue, a smaller asset base or both. Asset sales and depreciation can therefore improve the ratio mechanically even if operating performance is unchanged, which is why trend analysis should be reconciled to changes in both numerator and denominator.

Assumptions and Limitations
- Revenue and asset balances use comparable accounting periods.
- Average assets reasonably represent the period.
- Industry differences are considered in interpretation.
Practical tip
Using This Result in Practice
Pair asset turnover with profit margin. A company can generate a lot of sales from a small asset base while still earning weak returns if margins are poor.

Common questions
Asset Turnover Calculator FAQ
What does asset turnover measure?
Revenue generated per unit of average total assets.
Is higher asset turnover always better?
Not automatically. It can indicate efficiency, but profitability and industry structure also matter.
Why use average assets?
Revenue is earned across a period, so an average better matches the time basis than a single ending balance.
