About the Accounts Payable Turnover Calculator

Accounts payable turnover measures how frequently a company pays its average supplier payables during a period. It helps show the speed at which trade credit is being settled relative to purchases or cost flows.

The ratio should ideally use credit purchases, but those are not always disclosed. Using cost of goods sold can be an approximation, yet it may differ from actual purchases when inventory levels change.

How to Use the Accounts Payable Turnover Calculator

  1. Enter credit purchases or the chosen purchasing-cost proxy.
  2. Enter beginning and ending accounts payable or average payables.
  3. Calculate turnover.
  4. Keep the numerator definition consistent when comparing periods.

How the Calculation Works

Average accounts payable = (beginning payables + ending payables)÷2.

Accounts payable turnover = credit purchases ÷ average accounts payable. A higher turnover generally means suppliers are being paid more frequently relative to the balance carried.

Worked example

Accounts Payable Turnover Calculator Worked Example

$900,000 annual credit purchases and $150,000 average payables

Payables turnover = $900,000÷$150,000 = 6 times per year.

Understanding Your Accounts Payable Turnover Calculator Result

Six turns means the purchasing flow equals about six times the average payable balance. Faster turnover can reflect prompt payment, but it can also mean the business is not using available supplier terms fully. The ratio can also move because purchasing volume changes while payment policy stays the same. A large inventory build can increase purchases and raise turnover temporarily, so compare the ratio with DPO and inventory movements before concluding that suppliers are being paid faster.

Assumptions and Limitations

  • Purchases and payables refer to the same operating population.
  • Average payables reasonably represent the period.
  • The chosen numerator is labeled as credit purchases or a proxy.

Practical tip

Using This Result in Practice

Compare turnover with supplier terms and cash needs. Paying much faster than required may sacrifice useful working-capital financing, while paying too slowly can damage supplier relationships.

Common questions

Accounts Payable Turnover Calculator FAQ

What is accounts payable turnover?

Credit purchases divided by average accounts payable.

Is high payables turnover always good?

Not necessarily. Very fast payment can reduce available cash even when suppliers allow longer terms.

Can COGS be used instead of purchases?

Sometimes as an approximation, but it is not identical when inventory changes.
