Audio Bitrate Calculator
Calculate average audio bitrate from file size and playback duration
Average bitrate
How we calculated it
About the Audio Bitrate Calculator
Audio Bitrate Calculator works with audio data rate, file size and duration. It is useful for podcasts, music, voice recordings and streaming where the goal is to balance sound quality with storage or bandwidth.
Compressed bitrate and uncompressed PCM data rate are different concepts. MP3 or AAC uses a compressed target bitrate, while PCM depends directly on sample rate, bit depth and channel count.
How to Use the Audio Bitrate Calculator
- Choose compressed or PCM mode.
- Enter duration and either target file size or codec bitrate.
- For PCM, enter sample rate, bit depth and channels.
- Calculate bitrate or size and compare the result with the delivery format’s practical limits.
How the Calculation Works
For compressed audio, bitrate = file size in bits ÷ duration in seconds.
For PCM, raw bitrate = sample rate × bit depth × number of channels. A 48 kHz, 24-bit stereo signal therefore has 48,000×24×2 = 2,304,000 bits/s before container overhead.
Worked example
Audio Bitrate Calculator Worked Example
60 MB file lasting 40 minutes
60 MB decimal = 480 megabits. Duration = 2,400 seconds. Average bitrate = 480÷2,400 = 0.2 Mbps, or 200 kbps.
Result guide
Understanding Your Audio Bitrate Calculator Result
A 200 kbps average can be suitable for many compressed audio uses, but perceived quality depends on codec, content and encoder settings.
Before you rely on the answer
Assumptions and Limitations
- Duration and file size describe the same audio stream.
- Bit and byte units are converted correctly.
- Container metadata and variable-bitrate behavior are treated as small or estimated effects.
Practical tip
Using This Result in Practice
For speech, do not assume a music-oriented bitrate is necessary. Test representative audio at several settings and choose the lowest rate that preserves the quality you need.
