How we calculated it
About the Class Average Calculator
Class Average Calculator combines student scores to show the mean performance of a group. It is useful for teachers, tutors and students who want a quick view of overall class results across an assignment, test or course component.
A class average does not describe the whole distribution. The same mean can come from a tightly clustered class or from a mix of very high and very low scores, so median, spread and sample size can provide important context.
How to Use the Class Average Calculator
- Enter all student scores on the same scoring scale.
- Confirm whether missing submissions should be treated as zeros or excluded according to the grading policy.
- Calculate the arithmetic mean.
- Review the number of students and the spread of scores before interpreting the result.
How the Calculation Works
Class average = sum of all included scores ÷ number of included scores.
If scores come from different maximum marks, convert them to a common percentage or normalized scale before averaging unless the intended policy explicitly weights raw marks differently.
Worked example
Class Average Calculator Worked Example
Scores of 68, 72, 75, 81 and 84
Total = 68+72+75+81+84 = 380. Average = 380÷5 = 76.
Result guide
Understanding Your Class Average Calculator Result
An average of 76 gives the central arithmetic level of the entered scores. It does not mean most students scored exactly near 76, and one or two outliers can shift the mean noticeably.

Assumptions and Limitations
- All included scores are comparable.
- The grading policy for missing work is applied consistently.
- Equal weighting is intended unless a weighted average is used instead.
Practical tip
Using This Result in Practice
Use a weighted average when assignments contribute different percentages to a course grade. A simple class mean is most appropriate when each entered score represents the same assessment or carries equal importance.

Common questions
Class Average Calculator FAQ
How do I calculate a class average?
Add the included scores and divide by the number of included students.
Should missing assignments count as zero?
That depends on the grading policy; the calculator should follow the same rule used by the institution.
Is class average the same as median?
No. The mean uses all scores, while the median is the middle value after ordering them.
