Density Converter

Convert density between kilograms per cubic metre, grams per cubic centimetre, pounds per cubic foot and pounds per cubic inch

About the Density Converter

Density Converter changes mass-per-volume measurements between units such as kg/m³, g/cm³, lb/ft³ and lb/gal where supported. It is useful for materials, liquids and engineering data reported in different unit systems.

Density has both a mass unit and a volume unit, so both parts of the compound unit must be converted. A simple mass conversion alone will not produce the correct density.

How to Use the Density Converter

  1. Enter the density value.
  2. Choose the exact source compound unit.
  3. Choose the target compound unit.
  4. Convert and make sure the density refers to the same material condition, temperature and moisture state.

How the Calculation Works

The converter maps the mass numerator and volume denominator to a common basis, commonly kilograms per cubic metre, then forms the target ratio.

For example, 1 g/cm³ = 1,000 kg/m³ because 1 gram is 0.001 kg while 1 cm³ is 0.000001 m³.

Worked example

Density Converter Worked Example

2.7 g/cm³ to kg/m³

2.7×1,000 = 2,700 kg/m³.

Understanding Your Density Converter Result

The unit conversion does not change material density, but the actual physical density can change with temperature, pressure, porosity or moisture. Density figures for gases are especially condition-dependent because pressure and temperature change the volume strongly. When converting a gas-density specification, carry the reference temperature and pressure with the converted unit rather than comparing bare numbers.

Assumptions and Limitations

  • Source and target units are density units.
  • Material condition is unchanged during the unit conversion.
  • Bulk density is not confused with intrinsic particle density.

Practical tip

Using This Result in Practice

For sand, soil and aggregate, check whether the quoted value is loose bulk density, compacted bulk density or particle density before comparing numbers.

Common questions

Density Converter FAQ

How many kg/m³ is 1 g/cm³?

1,000 kg/m³.

Does density conversion change the physical material?

No. It changes only the units used to express the same density.

Why can bulk density differ from material density?

Bulk density includes void space between particles, while intrinsic density describes the material itself.
