Dividend payout ratio
How we calculated it
About the Dividend Payout Ratio Calculator
Dividend payout ratio measures how much of a company’s earnings are distributed to shareholders as dividends. It helps evaluate whether dividends consume a small, moderate or large share of reported profit.
A high payout can be sustainable for a mature stable company but risky for a cyclical or capital-intensive business. Earnings quality and free cash flow matter alongside the ratio.
How to Use the Dividend Payout Ratio Calculator
- Enter dividends paid or dividend per share.
- Enter net income or earnings per share on the matching basis.
- Calculate payout ratio.
- Compare the result with free cash flow and the company’s dividend history.
How the Calculation Works
Dividend payout ratio = dividends ÷ net income ×100, or dividend per share ÷ earnings per share ×100 when both per-share measures use the same basis.
The retention ratio is approximately 1−payout ratio when earnings are positive and the simple definitions apply.
Worked example
Dividend Payout Ratio Calculator Worked Example
$1.50 annual dividend per share and $3.00 EPS
Payout ratio = $1.50÷$3.00×100 = 50%.
Result guide
Understanding Your Dividend Payout Ratio Calculator Result
A 50% payout ratio means half of the selected earnings are being distributed as dividends and half retained under the simple earnings framework. When earnings are unusually depressed by a one-time charge, the payout ratio can temporarily exceed 100% even if the dividend is supported by normalized cash generation. Conversely, a low payout ratio can look conservative while free cash flow remains weak, so the earnings-based percentage needs cash context.

Assumptions and Limitations
- Dividend and earnings measures cover compatible periods.
- EPS is positive for normal interpretation.
- Special dividends and one-time earnings are identified when relevant.
Practical tip
Using This Result in Practice
Check payout against cash flow, not only accounting earnings. A company can report profits while cash generation is too weak to support the dividend comfortably.
