Fertilizer Calculator

Estimate fertilizer product needed from area, target nutrient rate and fertilizer analysis

Your result will appear here.

About the Fertilizer Calculator

Fertilizer Calculator converts a target nutrient application rate into the amount of fertilizer product needed for a lawn, garden or field. The key distinction is between pounds or kilograms of nutrient and pounds or kilograms of product.

A fertilizer labelled 10-10-10 contains 10% nitrogen, 10% phosphate and 10% potash by weight, so applying one kilogram of product does not apply one kilogram of nitrogen.

How to Use the Fertilizer Calculator

  1. Enter the treatment area.
  2. Enter the target nutrient rate, such as nitrogen per 1,000 ft² or per hectare.
  3. Enter the fertilizer analysis for the nutrient being targeted.
  4. Calculate product quantity and verify that the nutrient recommendation is appropriate for the crop, soil and season.

How the Calculation Works

Required nutrient = treatment area × target nutrient rate after converting the area to the rate basis.

Fertilizer product required = required nutrient ÷ nutrient fraction. For a product containing 20% nitrogen, the nutrient fraction is 0.20.

Worked example

Fertilizer Calculator Worked Example

Apply 1 lb nitrogen per 1,000 ft² using 20% nitrogen fertilizer

For 5,000 ft², required nitrogen is 5 lb. Product required = 5÷0.20 = 25 lb of fertilizer.

Result guide

Understanding Your Fertilizer Calculator Result

The result is product quantity needed to deliver the target amount of the selected nutrient. It does not determine whether that nutrient rate is agronomically appropriate.

Before you rely on the answer

Assumptions and Limitations

  • Fertilizer analysis matches the product label.
  • Target nutrient rate is appropriate for the crop and soil.
  • Application area is measured accurately.

Practical tip

Using This Result in Practice

Base nutrient rates on soil testing, crop guidance or product instructions rather than increasing the amount simply because more fertilizer seems beneficial. Over-application can damage plants and contribute to runoff.

Common questions

Fertilizer Calculator FAQ

What do fertilizer numbers like 10-10-10 mean?

They are percentages by weight of nitrogen, phosphate and potash in the product.

How do I calculate fertilizer product from a nutrient rate?

Divide the required nutrient amount by the nutrient percentage expressed as a decimal fraction.

Does the calculator tell me how much fertilizer my plants need?

No. The target nutrient rate should come from appropriate agronomic guidance.
