About the Generator Runtime Calculator
Generator Runtime Calculator estimates how long a generator may operate from a known fuel quantity at a given fuel-consumption rate. It is useful for backup planning, job sites and events where refueling intervals matter.
Fuel consumption changes with electrical load, engine size, temperature and generator design. A manufacturer’s half-load consumption figure should not be assumed to apply at every load level.
How to Use the Generator Runtime Calculator
- Enter usable fuel quantity.
- Enter fuel-consumption rate at the expected load.
- Calculate runtime.
- Test another load scenario if the generator may operate at substantially different output levels.
How the Calculation Works
Runtime = usable fuel quantity ÷ fuel-consumption rate.
If consumption is given per hour at a specified percentage load, the result is valid only when actual operation is reasonably close to that load. Variable load requires an average consumption estimate.
Worked example
Generator Runtime Calculator Worked Example
20 L usable fuel at 2.5 L/hour
Estimated runtime = 20÷2.5 = 8 hours.
Result guide
Understanding Your Generator Runtime Calculator Result
Eight hours is an estimate at the entered consumption rate. A heavier electrical load can raise fuel use and shorten runtime, while a lighter load may extend it. Fuel-consumption curves are usually nonlinear. A generator at 25% load may not burn exactly half as much fuel as it does at 50% load, so manufacturer load-specific data are better than assuming consumption scales perfectly with watts.
Before you rely on the answer
Assumptions and Limitations
- Fuel quantity is usable rather than total tank nameplate volume.
- Consumption rate matches expected load.
- Warm-up, idle and changing load are represented adequately by the chosen average.
Practical tip
Using This Result in Practice
For emergency planning, keep reserve fuel rather than scheduling operation until the mathematical tank-empty point. Refueling logistics and safe shutdown need margin.

Common questions
Generator Runtime Calculator FAQ
How is generator runtime calculated?
Divide usable fuel quantity by average fuel consumption per hour.
Why does runtime change with load?
Generators generally burn more fuel when producing more electrical power.
Should I use the full fuel-tank capacity?
For planning, usable fuel with a reserve is safer than assuming every drop can be consumed.
