About the Grade Calculator
A course grade can be misleading if assignments and exams do not all carry the same weight. This calculator combines weighted scores and can also work backward to estimate the result needed on a remaining assessment to reach a target final grade.
The calculation is only as accurate as the grading scheme you enter. Course rules such as dropped scores, extra credit, category caps or special rounding need to be represented separately if the calculator does not model them.
How to Use the Grade Calculator
- List each graded item or category with its score and the percentage weight it contributes to the final grade.
- Check that the weights describe the same grading scheme and add to the total expected by the course.
- If you are solving for a required final exam score, enter the current weighted grade, the exam weight and the target course grade.
- Calculate, then compare the result with the syllabus rules before treating it as the official course grade.
How the Calculation Works
For a weighted grade, each score is converted to a decimal and multiplied by its weight. The weighted contributions are added: final grade = Σ(score × weight) ÷ Σ(weights), depending on how the entered weights are represented.
For a required final score, the calculator separates the grade already earned from the remaining weight and solves the weighted-average equation for the unknown exam or assignment score.
Worked example
Grade Calculator Worked Example
Three weighted categories
Suppose homework is 90% at 30% weight, tests are 82% at 50% weight and a project is 95% at 20% weight. The contributions are 90×0.30=27, 82×0.50=41 and 95×0.20=19. Add them: 27+41+19=87. The weighted grade is 87%.
Result guide
Understanding Your Grade Calculator Result
A calculated grade tells you the arithmetic result under the weights you entered. If the required score on a remaining exam is above the maximum possible score, the target is not reachable under that grading setup without extra credit or a rule change.

Assumptions and Limitations
- Scores and weights are entered on compatible percentage scales.
- The weights reflect the course’s actual grading policy.
- Dropped assignments, extra credit and special rounding are excluded unless explicitly modeled.
Practical tip
Using This Result in Practice
Keep a copy of the syllabus beside the calculator. If the course uses category weights, calculate within each category first rather than treating every assignment as if it carried the same weight.

Useful Calculations to Continue With
If you need to combine course grades across credits or semesters, use the GPA Calculator rather than a single-course weighted grade.
If every score should count equally, the Average Calculator is simpler and avoids unnecessary weighting.
Common questions
Grade Calculator FAQ
What if my grade weights do not add to 100%?
That may be valid for an incomplete course, but the interpretation changes. Confirm whether the calculator should normalize the entered weights or whether missing work still has an unassigned weight.
Can this tell me what I need on the final exam?
Yes when the current grade, final-exam weight and target course grade are known. The calculator rearranges the weighted-grade equation to solve the required exam score.
Why might my instructor’s grade differ?
Learning systems may apply dropped scores, extra credit, category rules or different rounding. Use the syllabus and official gradebook rules as the final authority.
