Gravel Driveway Calculator
Estimate compacted and loose gravel volume, material weight and cost for a driveway
Loose gravel required
How we calculated it
About the Gravel Driveway Calculator
A gravel driveway estimate combines driveway area with the thickness of each aggregate layer. Driveways often use more than one material, such as a coarse base and finer surface layer, so each layer should be calculated on its own depth.
Volume can be converted to tons only with a bulk-density assumption. Moisture, stone size and compaction affect delivered weight and finished coverage.
How to Use the Gravel Driveway Calculator
- Measure driveway length and average width.
- Enter the compacted or design depth of the gravel layer.
- Calculate cubic volume.
- If ordering by weight, use a supplier density or tons-per-cubic-yard factor that matches the specific aggregate.
How the Calculation Works
For a rectangular driveway layer, volume = length × width × depth after units are normalized.
Cubic yards = cubic feet ÷ 27. Estimated weight = volume × bulk density, with density chosen for the actual aggregate rather than assumed from another material.
Worked example
Gravel Driveway Calculator Worked Example
60 ft × 12 ft driveway with 4 in gravel
4 inches = 0.3333 ft. Volume ≈ 60×12×0.3333 = 240 ft³. That equals about 8.89 yd³ before compaction, crown or waste adjustments.
Result guide
Understanding Your Gravel Driveway Calculator Result
The volume tells you the geometric amount of material at the entered depth. Supplier tonnage can differ depending on aggregate density and moisture.
Before you rely on the answer
Assumptions and Limitations
- Driveway dimensions reflect the placed area.
- Depth represents the intended layer basis.
- Density or tonnage factor matches the aggregate and condition.
Practical tip
Using This Result in Practice
If the driveway uses a base and wearing course, calculate them separately. Do not average a 6-inch base and 2-inch top layer unless both use the same material and density.

If you only need the geometric volume without driveway-specific context, use the Cubic Yard Calculator.
Common questions
Gravel Driveway Calculator FAQ
How do I calculate gravel driveway volume?
Multiply length, width and depth after converting all dimensions to compatible units.
Can I convert cubic yards directly to tons?
Only with a density or supplier conversion appropriate to the aggregate.
Should I include compaction?
Yes when the project specifies compacted finished depth; ordering may require extra loose material to achieve it.
