Landscape Fabric Calculator
Estimate strips, fabric length and whole rolls with overlap and waste
Landscape fabric required
How we calculated it
About the Landscape Fabric Calculator
Landscape Fabric Calculator estimates the sheet area or roll length needed to cover beds, paths or planted areas. It helps account for overlap between adjacent strips and extra material around irregular edges.
Fabric is sold by roll width and length, so purchase quantity depends on layout as well as net ground area. Narrow beds can create more offcuts than one large rectangular area with the same total square footage.
How to Use the Landscape Fabric Calculator
- Measure each area to be covered.
- Enter fabric roll width and overlap between strips if supported.
- Calculate required coverage and number of strips or rolls.
- Add a practical trimming allowance around curves, trees and fixed objects.
How the Calculation Works
Net area is calculated from the bed geometry, while strip layout uses roll width minus overlap as the effective coverage width.
Required strip length is based on how many effective-width strips are needed across the bed. Total roll area or length is then rounded up to whole purchasable rolls.
Worked example
Landscape Fabric Calculator Worked Example
20 ft × 10 ft bed using 4-ft fabric with 6-in overlaps
Effective coverage per strip is 3.5 ft after a 0.5-ft overlap. Covering 10 ft therefore requires 3 strips, each about 20 ft long, before trimming allowance.
Result guide
Understanding Your Landscape Fabric Calculator Result
The required purchase quantity can exceed net bed area because overlapping strips and edge waste do not contribute new coverage.
Before you rely on the answer
Assumptions and Limitations
- Bed dimensions reflect the covered area.
- Overlap matches the installation plan.
- Roll width and length come from the actual product.
Practical tip
Using This Result in Practice
Plan strip direction before ordering. Running fabric along the longer dimension can reduce seams in some beds, while another orientation may reduce offcuts depending on roll width.

If compost or another amendment will be applied beneath the fabric, use the Soil Amendment Calculator for that material.
Common questions
Landscape Fabric Calculator FAQ
Why does fabric quantity exceed bed area?
Overlaps, trimming and roll layout create additional material use.
How do I account for overlap?
Subtract the overlap from roll width to find effective coverage per strip.
Should I buy by square feet only?
Not always. Roll width and strip layout can determine how much of the purchased roll is usable.
