Parallelogram Calculator
Calculate parallelogram area, perimeter and diagonal lengths from two sides and the included angle
Parallelogram area
How we calculated it
About the Parallelogram Calculator
Parallelogram Calculator finds area, perimeter and related dimensions for a quadrilateral whose opposite sides are parallel. It is useful for geometry, sloped panels, paving layouts and vector-based area problems.
The area depends on base length and perpendicular height, not simply on the length of the adjacent sloping side. A very slanted parallelogram can have long sides but relatively small area if its height is low.
How to Use the Parallelogram Calculator
- Enter the base length.
- Enter perpendicular height for area.
- Enter the adjacent side if perimeter is required.
- Calculate and keep the slanted side distinct from the altitude.
How the Calculation Works
Area A = base × perpendicular height.
Perimeter P = 2(a+b), where a and b are adjacent side lengths. If an included angle θ is known instead of height, area can also be written A=ab sinθ.
Worked example
Parallelogram Calculator Worked Example
Base 12 cm and perpendicular height 7 cm
Area = 12×7 = 84 cm². If the adjacent side is 9 cm, perimeter = 2×(12+9) = 42 cm.
Result guide
Understanding Your Parallelogram Calculator Result
The area remains unchanged if the top edge slides sideways while base and perpendicular height stay constant. That is why slant angle alone does not determine area. If coordinates are given instead of base and height, the area can also be found from the magnitude of a two-dimensional cross-product equivalent: |x₁y₂−y₁x₂| for adjacent side vectors. That approach is useful when the shape is defined by vectors rather than measured altitude.
Before you rely on the answer
Assumptions and Limitations
- Opposite sides are parallel.
- Height is measured perpendicular to the selected base.
- All dimensions use compatible units.
Practical tip
Using This Result in Practice
When a drawing provides an angle and side length but no height, calculate height with h=b sinθ before using base×height. Do not multiply the two side lengths directly unless the angle is 90°.
