About the Tip Calculator

Splitting a restaurant bill becomes easier when the gratuity, total and per-person share are calculated together. This tool works from the bill amount and chosen tip percentage, with an optional equal split across the group.

Before adding a tip, check the receipt for an included service charge or automatic gratuity. In some restaurants or group bookings, an amount may already have been added.

How to Use the Tip Calculator

  1. Enter the bill amount before the tip using the amount you intend to base the gratuity on.
  2. Choose or enter the tip percentage.
  3. If the bill is being split, enter the number of people sharing the total.
  4. Calculate the tip, final bill and per-person amount, then check the receipt for service charges before paying.

How the Calculation Works

Tip amount = bill amount × tip percentage ÷ 100. Total bill = bill amount + tip amount.

When splitting equally, amount per person = total bill ÷ number of people. The calculator assumes an equal split unless a different split method is explicitly provided.

Worked example

Tip Calculator Worked Example

18% tip on a $72 bill

Tip = $72 × 0.18 = $12.96. Total bill = $72 + $12.96 = $84.96. Split equally between four people, $84.96 ÷ 4 = $21.24 per person.

Result guide

Understanding Your Tip Calculator Result

The calculated tip is a percentage choice, not a rule about what you must pay. Local customs, service charges and the service situation determine what is appropriate.

Assumptions and Limitations

  • The entered bill amount is the intended tip base.
  • The tip percentage is added once and no service charge is already included.
  • Equal split assumes each person agrees to share the total equally.

Practical tip

Using This Result in Practice

If tax is included in the displayed bill, decide whether you want to tip on the pre-tax or after-tax amount according to your preference and local practice. The calculator follows the amount you enter.

Common questions

Tip Calculator FAQ

Should I tip before or after tax?

There is no universal rule. Some people calculate tip on the pre-tax subtotal, while others use the final bill. Enter whichever amount you intend to use as the base.

What if gratuity is already included?

Check the receipt. If an automatic gratuity or service charge is already included, adding the same percentage again may double-tip unless you intentionally want an additional amount.

How do I split the bill with a tip?

Calculate the tip and add it to the bill first, then divide the total by the number of people for an equal split.
