Wheel Speed Calculator
Estimate vehicle speed from wheel diameter and wheel RPM
Vehicle speed
How we calculated it
About the Wheel Speed Calculator
Wheel speed connects vehicle road speed with tire circumference. It is useful for estimating wheel RPM, drivetrain speed and the effect of changing tire diameter on rotational speed.
A larger tire rotates fewer times per mile at the same road speed, while a smaller tire rotates more quickly.
How to Use the Wheel Speed Calculator
- Enter vehicle speed.
- Enter tire diameter or circumference.
- Choose the desired wheel-speed output, such as RPM.
- Calculate and use effective rolling diameter rather than nominal size when high precision is required.
How the Calculation Works
Wheel revolutions per unit distance = distance ÷ tire circumference. Combining that with vehicle speed gives revolutions per unit time.
For RPM, the calculator converts road speed to distance per minute and divides by circumference.
Worked example
Wheel Speed Calculator Worked Example
60 mph with a 30-inch tire
A 30-inch tire has circumference π×30 ≈ 94.25 inches. At 60 mph, the vehicle travels 63,360 inches per minute, so wheel speed is about 63,360÷94.25 ≈ 672 RPM.
Result guide
Understanding Your Wheel Speed Calculator Result
Wheel RPM is inversely related to tire diameter at a fixed road speed. Tire-size changes therefore also affect engine RPM through the drivetrain.
Before you rely on the answer
Assumptions and Limitations
- No tire slip is assumed.
- Tire diameter represents effective rolling diameter.
- Vehicle speed is steady.
Practical tip
Using This Result in Practice
For off-road or heavily loaded vehicles, actual rolling radius can differ from nominal unloaded diameter because of tire deflection. If wheel RPM is being used to estimate driveline or bearing speed, also account for gear reduction between the wheel and the component being analyzed. The wheel calculation only describes the tire itself.

Common questions
Wheel Speed Calculator FAQ
Why does a larger tire reduce wheel RPM?
Each revolution covers more distance, so fewer revolutions are required to travel at the same road speed.
Does wheel speed equal engine RPM?
No. Gear ratios and final drive change the rotational relationship between engine and wheels.
Can tire slip affect wheel-speed calculations?
Yes. The geometric calculation assumes rolling without slip.
