Aggregate Base Calculator
Estimate aggregate base volume, tonnage and optional material cost for a compacted layer
Estimated tons to order
How we calculated it
About the Aggregate Base Calculator
Aggregate base quantity depends on finished area, compacted thickness and material density. It is used below pavements, slabs, driveways and other surfaces where a stable granular layer is required.
The compacted volume placed on site is not always the same as the loose volume delivered. Compaction, moisture and aggregate gradation affect how many tonnes or cubic yards must be ordered.
How to Use the Aggregate Base Calculator
- Enter the base length and width or total area.
- Enter the required compacted thickness.
- Calculate compacted volume.
- Use a supplier density or compaction factor when converting the volume to delivered weight or loose quantity.
How the Calculation Works
Compacted base volume = area × compacted depth after depth is converted to the same linear unit.
If ordering by mass, estimated mass = volume × compacted or supplier bulk density. If the supplier quotes loose material, a project-specific conversion may be needed between compacted and delivered volume.
Worked example
Aggregate Base Calculator Worked Example
1,000 ft² area with 6 in compacted base
6 in=0.5 ft. Compacted volume = 1,000×0.5 = 500 ft³, or about 18.52 yd³ before converting to delivered loose quantity or tonnes.
Result guide
Understanding Your Aggregate Base Calculator Result
The geometric result is the finished base volume. The actual truck quantity can be higher because loose aggregate occupies more volume before compaction.
Before you rely on the answer
Assumptions and Limitations
- Area and compacted thickness match the design.
- Bulk density corresponds to the actual aggregate.
- Compaction conversion is not assumed universal across materials.
Practical tip
Using This Result in Practice
Ask the supplier whether their tons-per-yard figure describes loose delivered material or compacted material. Using the wrong basis can leave the project significantly short.

Common questions
Aggregate Base Calculator FAQ
How do I calculate aggregate base volume?
Multiply area by compacted layer thickness.
Why do I need more loose material than compacted volume?
Loose aggregate contains more void space before compaction.
Can I convert cubic yards to tons with one universal factor?
No. Bulk density varies by aggregate type, moisture and compaction.
