Asphalt Calculator

Estimate asphalt volume and weight for a driveway, parking area or paving project

Actual asphalt density varies by mix and supplier. Use the supplier density when available.

About the Asphalt Calculator

Asphalt quantity for a driveway or pavement section depends on area, compacted thickness and mix density. Contractors and suppliers may quote the material by ton, so both volume and density matter.

This calculator converts the geometric layer into an approximate weight for planning, but actual mix density and compaction should come from project or supplier data.

How to Use the Asphalt Calculator

  1. Measure pavement length and width.
  2. Enter the compacted asphalt thickness.
  3. Enter or select a representative asphalt density.
  4. Calculate volume and estimated weight, then confirm tonnage with the supplier or contractor.

How the Calculation Works

Volume = area × thickness after units are normalized. Estimated mass = volume × density.

Conversions then express the result in tons or tonnes as requested. Because density is an input to weight, changing mix density changes the tonnage without changing geometric volume.

Worked example

Asphalt Calculator Worked Example

50 ft × 20 ft at 3 inches thick

Three inches = 0.25 ft. Volume = 50×20×0.25 = 250 ft³. The final tonnage depends on the density of the asphalt mix used for the estimate.

Result guide

Understanding Your Asphalt Calculator Result

The volume describes the pavement geometry; weight describes how much mix is needed at the assumed density. Compaction specification should determine which thickness and density basis you use.

Before you rely on the answer

Assumptions and Limitations

  • Entered thickness represents the intended compacted or specified layer.
  • Density is appropriate for the asphalt mix.
  • Base preparation and surface irregularities are separate from asphalt quantity.

Practical tip

Using This Result in Practice

Do not use a generic tons-per-cubic-yard factor when the supplier provides a project-specific mix density. That value will usually produce a better tonnage estimate.

Common questions

Asphalt Calculator FAQ

Why is asphalt often ordered by weight?

Mix plants commonly sell asphalt by tonnage, so geometric volume is converted using the mix density.

Should I enter loose or compacted thickness?

Use the thickness basis required by the project and make sure the density/allowance is consistent with it.

Does this include the gravel base?

No. Asphalt and aggregate base are separate layers and should be estimated separately.
