About the Aquarium Volume Calculator
Aquarium Volume Calculator estimates water capacity from tank dimensions and shape. It is useful for filtration, dosing and maintenance planning because aquarium products are often specified by litres or gallons.
The glass tank’s geometric volume is usually higher than actual water volume. Substrate, rocks, equipment and leaving space below the rim all reduce the amount of water present.
How to Use the Aquarium Volume Calculator
- Choose the tank shape.
- Enter internal length, width and water height or the required curved-tank dimensions.
- Calculate geometric water volume.
- Reduce the result if substrate, decor or displacement occupies a significant part of the tank.
How the Calculation Works
For a rectangular aquarium, V = internal length × internal width × water height.
Cylindrical or other supported shapes use their corresponding geometric formulas. The cubic result is converted into litres, U.S. gallons or other selected volume units.
Worked example
Aquarium Volume Calculator Worked Example
100 cm × 40 cm × 50 cm rectangular tank
Volume = 100×40×50 = 200,000 cm³. Since 1,000 cm³ = 1 litre, gross geometric volume is 200 L.
Result guide
Understanding Your Aquarium Volume Calculator Result
A 200 L geometric tank may hold noticeably less than 200 L of actual water after substrate, rocks and headspace are included. For bow-front, hexagonal or corner aquariums, split the tank into simple geometric sections when an exact supported shape is unavailable. Summing those sections is generally more accurate than forcing the entire tank into one rectangular approximation.
Before you rely on the answer
Assumptions and Limitations
- Internal dimensions are used for water capacity.
- Tank shape matches the selected formula.
- Displacement is excluded from gross geometric volume.
Practical tip
Using This Result in Practice
For medication or water treatment, estimate actual water volume rather than relying only on the tank model name. Large rockwork can reduce true capacity by a meaningful amount.

Common questions
Aquarium Volume Calculator FAQ
Should I use inside or outside aquarium dimensions?
Use internal dimensions for water capacity.
Why is actual water volume lower than tank volume?
Substrate, decor, equipment and headspace displace or replace water.
How many litres are in 1,000 cm³?
