Pool Volume Calculator

Estimate pool water volume from shape, dimensions, average depth and current fill level

About the Pool Volume Calculator

Pool Volume Calculator estimates how much water a swimming pool holds from its shape and dimensions. It is useful for filling, chemical dosing and equipment sizing when manufacturer capacity is unavailable.

Average depth is important for sloped pools. Using the deepest point as if the whole pool had that depth can substantially overstate volume.

How to Use the Pool Volume Calculator

  1. Choose the pool shape that best matches the actual pool.
  2. Enter length, width or diameter.
  3. Enter average water depth or shallow and deep depths when supported.
  4. Calculate volume and use the result as a planning estimate for water treatment or filling.

How the Calculation Works

For a rectangular pool, volume = length × width × average depth. A circular pool uses V = πr²×average depth.

When shallow and deep depths change approximately linearly, average depth can be estimated as (shallow depth + deep depth) ÷ 2 before multiplying by surface area.

Worked example

Pool Volume Calculator Worked Example

30 ft × 15 ft pool averaging 5 ft deep

Volume = 30×15×5 = 2,250 ft³. At about 7.4805 U.S. gallons per ft³, that is approximately 16,831 gallons.

Result guide

Understanding Your Pool Volume Calculator Result

The result is geometric water volume. Steps, benches, curved walls and actual fill level can make true capacity differ from the simple shape estimate.

Before you rely on the answer

Assumptions and Limitations

  • Selected geometry reasonably represents the pool.
  • Average depth represents the actual water profile.
  • Steps, benches and irregular contours are excluded unless specifically modeled.

Practical tip

Using This Result in Practice

For chemical treatment, compare the calculated volume with any builder or equipment documentation available. Dosing errors scale directly with volume errors.

Common questions

Pool Volume Calculator FAQ

How do I find average pool depth?

For a simple linear slope, average shallow and deep depths by adding them and dividing by two.

How many gallons are in one cubic foot?

About 7.4805 U.S. gallons.

Why might actual pool capacity differ?

Steps, benches, curved walls and the real fill level change the water volume from a simple geometric model.
