How we calculated it
About the Customer Acquisition Cost Calculator
Customer acquisition cost estimates how much sales and marketing spending is required to acquire one new customer. It is a useful unit-economics metric because it connects growth spending with actual customer volume.
CAC should use a clearly defined cost scope. Media-only CAC and fully loaded CAC can be very different, so comparisons are only meaningful when the numerator is consistent.
How to Use the Customer Acquisition Cost Calculator
- Enter the acquisition-related sales and marketing costs you want included.
- Enter the number of new customers acquired during the same period.
- Calculate CAC.
- Compare CAC with contribution margin or customer lifetime value rather than revenue alone.
How the Calculation Works
CAC = total included acquisition costs ÷ number of new customers acquired.
A fully loaded calculation may include media, agency, sales payroll, software and campaign costs, while a narrower paid-media CAC uses only advertising spend.
Worked example
Customer Acquisition Cost Calculator Worked Example
$60,000 acquisition spend and 1,200 new customers
CAC = $60,000÷1,200 = $50 per new customer.
Result guide
Understanding Your Customer Acquisition Cost Calculator Result
A lower CAC is generally favourable only if customer quality and retention remain strong. Cutting acquisition cost can be harmful if it attracts low-value customers.
Before you rely on the answer
Assumptions and Limitations
- Costs and acquired customers use the same period and attribution basis.
- Only new customers are included in the denominator.
- The cost scope is labeled consistently across comparisons.
Practical tip
Using This Result in Practice
Track both paid-media CAC and fully loaded CAC when possible. The first helps optimize campaigns; the second is more useful for understanding the economics of the whole acquisition engine.

Common questions
Customer Acquisition Cost Calculator FAQ
What costs should be included in CAC?
It depends on the definition. A fully loaded CAC can include sales and marketing labor, software and media, while a narrow version may include ad spend only.
Should existing customers be included?
No. CAC normally uses newly acquired customers in the denominator.
Is lower CAC always better?
Not if lower cost comes with worse retention, smaller orders or lower customer value.
