Drywall Calculator

Estimate drywall sheets from total wall and ceiling area with an adjustable waste allowance

Enter the net surface area after subtracting openings if you do not plan to cover them.

About the Drywall Calculator

Drywall quantity depends on wall and ceiling area, sheet size and the amount of waste created by cuts and layout. A simple square-foot total is only the first step in estimating whole sheets.

This calculator converts measured surfaces into sheet count and can add a waste allowance for practical ordering.

How to Use the Drywall Calculator

  1. Measure the walls and ceilings that will receive drywall.
  2. Subtract major openings only when doing so will genuinely reduce sheet use.
  3. Choose the actual sheet size you plan to install.
  4. Add a reasonable waste allowance and round up to whole sheets.

How the Calculation Works

Net surface area is calculated from the measured wall and ceiling sections. Sheet area = sheet length × sheet width.

Theoretical sheet count = net area ÷ sheet area, then waste is applied and the purchase count is rounded up to whole sheets.

Worked example

Drywall Calculator Worked Example

800 ft² using 4×8 sheets

One 4×8 sheet covers 32 ft². 800 ÷ 32 = 25 theoretical sheets. With 10% waste, 25×1.10 = 27.5, so the planning quantity rounds to 28 sheets.

Result guide

Understanding Your Drywall Calculator Result

Sheet count is influenced by layout as well as area. Large openings may create reusable offcuts, while short wall sections can increase waste.

Before you rely on the answer

Assumptions and Limitations

  • Surface measurements are accurate.
  • Sheet dimensions match the product being purchased.
  • Waste allowance reflects cuts, breakage and layout.

Practical tip

Using This Result in Practice

Plan sheet orientation around framing and ceiling height before ordering. A different sheet length can reduce horizontal joints and waste even when total square footage stays the same.

Common questions

Drywall Calculator FAQ

Should I subtract doors and windows from drywall area?

Large openings can be subtracted, but small openings may not reduce sheet purchases because surrounding cuts still require full sheets.

Why round drywall sheets up?

Drywall is bought as whole sheets and cutoffs may not be reusable for every remaining space.

How much drywall waste should I allow?

Waste varies with room shape, sheet orientation and installer planning. Complex layouts generally require more allowance than simple rectangular walls.
