About the Employee Turnover Calculator

Employee turnover rate measures how many employees leave an organization relative to its average workforce over a period. It can be tracked for all departures or separated into voluntary and involuntary turnover.

A single percentage does not explain why people left or whether turnover is harmful. Some turnover is expected, while repeated loss of critical or high-performing employees can be costly even when the overall rate looks moderate.

How to Use the Employee Turnover Calculator

  1. Enter the number of employee separations during the period.
  2. Enter beginning and ending headcount, or average headcount if already known.
  3. Calculate turnover rate.
  4. Keep the time period and turnover definition consistent when comparing teams or years.

How the Calculation Works

Average headcount can be approximated as (beginning headcount + ending headcount)÷2 when more detailed monthly averages are unavailable.

Turnover rate = employee separations ÷ average headcount ×100. Voluntary turnover uses voluntary exits only in the numerator, while total turnover includes the defined set of separations.

Worked example

Employee Turnover Calculator Worked Example

24 departures with average headcount of 200

Turnover rate = 24÷200×100 = 12% for the measured period.

Result guide

Understanding Your Employee Turnover Calculator Result

A 12% annual turnover rate and a 12% quarterly turnover rate describe very different levels of employee movement, so the period must always accompany the percentage.

Assumptions and Limitations

  • Separations and headcount use the same employee population.
  • The period is clearly defined.
  • Transfers or contractor changes are included only if the chosen definition says so.

Practical tip

Using This Result in Practice

Segment turnover by tenure, role and manager when possible. A stable company-wide average can hide a serious retention issue among new hires or one critical department.
