Siding Calculator

Estimate siding area and squares after subtracting doors and windows

Your result will appear here.

About the Siding Calculator

Siding quantity depends on net wall area, product coverage and the waste created by cuts around openings, corners and roof lines. A whole-house perimeter alone is not enough when wall heights or gable shapes vary.

This calculator turns measured exterior surfaces into a purchase area and can convert that area into squares, panels or cartons when product coverage is known.

How to Use the Siding Calculator

  1. Measure each exterior wall section and any gable areas.
  2. Subtract large doors and windows where doing so reflects the installation plan.
  3. Enter the siding product’s coverage per panel, carton or square.
  4. Add waste for cuts and layout, then round up to whole purchasable units.

How the Calculation Works

Net siding area is the sum of wall and gable areas minus excluded openings. Waste-adjusted area = net area × (1+waste rate).

Package quantity = adjusted area ÷ labeled product coverage, rounded up to the next whole unit.

Worked example

Siding Calculator Worked Example

1,800 ft² net wall area with 10% waste

Adjusted coverage = 1,800×1.10 = 1,980 ft². If one carton covers 100 ft², 1,980÷100 = 19.8, so the purchase estimate rounds to 20 cartons.

Result guide

Understanding Your Siding Calculator Result

The calculator estimates field siding coverage. Starter strips, corners, trim, soffit and flashing often require separate material counts.

Before you rely on the answer

Assumptions and Limitations

  • Wall and gable measurements represent the surfaces to be sided.
  • Product coverage is taken from the actual siding package.
  • Waste allowance reflects cuts and layout complexity.

Practical tip

Using This Result in Practice

Measure gables separately rather than using the rectangular wall beneath them. Triangular gable area can be significant on steep roofs.

Common questions

Siding Calculator FAQ

What is a siding square?

In many U.S. siding contexts, one square represents 100 square feet of coverage, but always confirm the product convention.

Should windows be subtracted from siding area?

Large openings can be deducted, although some installers leave smaller openings in the estimate to help cover waste.

Does siding quantity include trim?

Not usually. Corner posts, J-channel, starter strips and other trim pieces should be estimated separately.
