Speed Distance Time Calculator

Calculate speed, distance or travel time when you know the other two values.

About the Speed Distance Time Calculator

Travel problems often contain two known quantities and one missing one: speed, distance or time. This calculator rearranges the same core relationship to solve whichever value is unknown.

Average speed is not the same as the speed shown at every moment. Stops, traffic and changing speed can produce the same total distance and time with very different driving conditions.

How to Use the Speed Distance Time Calculator

  1. Choose which quantity you want to calculate: speed, distance or time.
  2. Enter the other two known values and select their units.
  3. Use total elapsed time if stops are meant to be part of the average, or moving time if they are not.
  4. Calculate and convert the result to the unit that best fits the trip or problem.

How the Calculation Works

The core relationship is distance = speed × time. Rearranging gives speed = distance ÷ time and time = distance ÷ speed.

Units are normalized before the formula is applied, so minutes may be converted to hours and kilometres to miles where required.

Worked example

Speed Distance Time Calculator Worked Example

150 km in 2.5 hours

Average speed = 150 ÷ 2.5 = 60 km/h. At that same average speed, another 90 km would take 90 ÷ 60 = 1.5 hours.

Result guide

Understanding Your Speed Distance Time Calculator Result

The result describes an average relationship over the entered interval. It should not be used to infer peak speed or exact arrival time when traffic and stops are uncertain.

Assumptions and Limitations

  • Distance and time refer to the same journey.
  • Average-speed modeling is appropriate for the question.
  • Stops are included or excluded consistently.

Practical tip

Using This Result in Practice

For travel planning, add a separate buffer for breaks, border crossings or traffic rather than inflating the speed calculation itself. Keeping movement time and delay time separate makes the plan easier to update.

Common questions

Speed Distance Time Calculator FAQ

What is the formula for speed?

Speed = distance ÷ time.

How do I calculate travel time?

Divide distance by average speed after converting both to compatible units.

Does average speed include stops?

Only if the entered time includes them. Use moving time for moving average speed and total elapsed time for door-to-door average speed.
