Travel Time Calculator
Estimate travel time from distance and average speed
Use matching distance and speed units, such as miles and mph or kilometers and km/h.

How we calculated it
About the Travel Time Calculator
Travel time estimates how long a journey takes from distance and expected average speed. It is useful for road trips, deliveries and route planning when you want a movement-time estimate before adding scheduled stops.
Average speed should reflect the route rather than the highest speed limit. Urban traffic, rough roads and border or ferry delays can make real door-to-door travel substantially longer.
How to Use the Travel Time Calculator
- Enter the journey distance.
- Enter a realistic average speed.
- Calculate movement time.
- Add rest stops, traffic buffers and fixed delays separately so they remain visible instead of hiding them inside the speed assumption.
How the Calculation Works
Travel time = distance ÷ average speed after units are converted to a common system.
The decimal time result can then be converted into hours and minutes. Fixed delays are added afterward when the calculator includes them.
Worked example
Travel Time Calculator Worked Example
240 km at 80 km/h
Movement time = 240÷80 = 3 hours. If the route includes a 30-minute stop, total planned time becomes 3 hours 30 minutes.

Understanding Your Travel Time Calculator Result
The result is only as realistic as the average-speed assumption. A route with changing road conditions should not be modeled using the fastest section’s speed.

Assumptions and Limitations
- Distance represents the intended route.
- Average speed is realistic for the full moving portion.
- Stops and fixed delays are excluded unless explicitly added.
Practical tip
Using This Result in Practice
For long trips, estimate driving time and stop time separately. This makes the itinerary easier to revise when one component changes.

Common questions
Travel Time Calculator FAQ
How do I calculate travel time?
Divide distance by average speed after converting the units consistently.
Should I use the speed limit as average speed?
Usually not. Real average speed is often lower because of traffic, junctions and slower road sections.
How should stops be handled?
Add them separately to movement time so the driving-speed assumption remains realistic and transparent.
