Stud Calculator

Estimate wall studs from wall length, spacing, openings, corners and waste allowance

About the Stud Calculator

Stud Calculator estimates the number of vertical framing studs required along a wall from wall length and chosen on-centre spacing. It can also account for end studs and selected extra framing around openings or corners.

The arithmetic is a material estimate, not a framing plan. Load-bearing requirements, corners, headers, fire blocking and local code details determine the actual wall assembly.

How to Use the Stud Calculator

  1. Enter wall length.
  2. Enter stud spacing, such as 16 or 24 inches on centre, according to the design.
  3. Calculate the base stud count.
  4. Add extra studs for corners, openings and structural details based on the actual framing plan.

How the Calculation Works

Number of spaces is wall length ÷ stud spacing, rounded so the specified maximum spacing is not exceeded.

For a simple straight wall with a stud at each end, base stud count is spaces + 1. Extra framing is then added separately.

Worked example

Stud Calculator Worked Example

12 ft wall at 16 inches on centre

12 ft = 144 inches. 144÷16 = 9 spaces, so a simple uninterrupted wall requires 10 stud positions before adding corner or opening framing.

Result guide

Understanding Your Stud Calculator Result

The result covers regular spacing along the wall. Door and window assemblies can add king studs, jack studs and other members beyond the base count.

Before you rely on the answer

Assumptions and Limitations

  • Wall length is measured along the framing line.
  • Spacing matches the approved framing design.
  • Openings, corners and special structural members are added separately.

Practical tip

Using This Result in Practice

Lay out openings before finalizing the order. A wall with several doors or windows can require substantially more studs than a spacing-only estimate suggests.

Common questions

Stud Calculator FAQ

How many studs are needed at 16 inches on centre?

Divide the wall length in inches by 16 for spaces, then add an end stud for a simple uninterrupted wall.

Does the calculator include door framing?

Not unless explicitly entered; openings often require extra studs.

Can the calculator decide whether to use 16 or 24 inches on centre?

No. Spacing must come from the structural or code-compliant wall design.
